Friday Random Ten - 05.27.05
Time for Friday Random Ten, where you hit "shuffle" on your favorite digital music player (for me my Windows MediaPlayer at work) and report on the first ten songs that it spits out.
Seems as though my MediaPlayer has been reading my blog - about half the artists on this week's list were mentioned in my recent "Take Five [Take Two]" post, and the rest probably should have been. I don't understand how my MediaPlayer would be able to see my blog, but I'm also the guy who had trouble understanding an On/Off switch.
Here goes:
"Devil With The Green Eyes" - Matthew Sweet (from Altered Beast)
"Overpowered By Funk" - The Clash (from Combat Rock)
"Roxanne" - The Police (from Outlandos d'Amore)
"Like A Soldier" - Johnny Cash (from American Recordings)
"Help Yourself" - Joan Armatrading (from Joan Armatrading)
"If I Could Talk I'd Tell You" - The Lemonheads (from Car Button Cloth)
"Hostage-O" - Warren Zevon (from Life'll Kill Ya)
"For The Shame Of Doing Wrong" - Evan Dando (from Beat The Retreat: Songs By Richard Thompson)
"Write Your Own Song" - Matthew Sweet (from In Reverse)
"Pilgrim" - Steve Earle and the Del McCoury Band (from The Mountain)
Update: Fellow Philly blogger Matt from the Tattered Coat added a pretty cool idea to the end of his Friday Random Ten. So cool that I'm going to shamelessly steal it:
Song I like most from this week's list: There's a lot of good ones, but on a sunny day like today my ears are favoring the bouncy "If I Could Talk I'd Tell You."
Song I like least from this week's list: And just after picking one Evan Dando song as a favorite, I'm naming another one my least favorite. Beat The Retreat's a really great tribute album, but Dando's cover of "For The Shame Of Doing Wrong" isn't anything to write home about.
Best album on the list: It's hard not to pick the 80's one-two punch of the Police debut and the Clash's hard hitting Combat Rock, but I'm going to say the best are the two Matthew Sweet CDs. Just don't ask me to choose one over the other.

I have a sweet spot in my heart for Matthew Sweet, too. I always loved imagining him alone in his basement, playing every single instrument on the album one-by-one.
