RIYL8
My RIYLmusic Top 30 list for the week beginning June 05, 2006 [Where I get to pretend I'm a program director at my very own hip radio station (full story here)].
Three new ones this week:
Psapp The Only Thing I Ever Wanted My entire electronia collection consist of a couple Everything But the Girl discs and that Massive Attack CD where Shara Nelson sounds just like EBtG's Tracey Thorn. I really like EBtG a lot, but they get so serious sometimes, and hel-lo! they haven't put an album out in like for-ever! Enter Psapp (the first "p" is silent, I'm not sure about the last "p') - lighthearted electronia, and it's available on a brand-spanking-new release. Just one warning: the Fisher Price-meets-Black & Decker backing instrumentation might get on your nerves after a while. Decide for yourself - the whole album is streaming at MSN’s new release page. For the less adventurous, 3hive has posted a couple highlights from the disc.
Johnny Cash Personal File Forty-nine songs recorded at Cash's Herdersonville, TN home back in '73 and only discovered after his death in '03. I've only heard a couple tunes from this double disc - and I can't find any samples beyond the tiny ones offered on the Amazon page - but after seeing Walk the Line, I'm ready to hear some new-old Cash. I need to get Joaquin's lame attempt at Johnny's baritone out of my system.
Elvis Costello & Allen Toussaint The River In Reverse When Elvis Costello expands his horizons, he does it right - with folks like Burt Bacharach, Chet Baker, and now piano legend Allen Toussaint. Bacharach had him doing some mellow sixties pop and Chet wasn't exactly known for being real upbeat (at least not around the time he worked with Costello), but with Toussaint Elvis gets to have some fun - and he's in great form with Toussaint's N'awlin sound backing him up. Verve Records is streaming the first single (Elvis' take on Toussaint's "Tears, Tears and More Tears") and MSN has some footage of the two from Jazzfest.

XPN is playing the you-know-what out of that Mates of State song, "Think Long." Not bad!
I'm totally into the Raconteurs album. Makes me wish I was in high school...it's kegger music.
