Homophobia Spreads...

you've gotta be kidding me. if more people were gay, how would we survive as a human race? the rates are dropping as we speak, and the gays are not helping

This was a response to my Spongebob as Homosexual post a while ago.  I don't mean to single this kid out but I can't think of a way to discuss since there was no e-mail. 

Dear Normal,

  I don't want to be the one to break this to you but someone must:  If the human race is declining, it is not because of homosexuals.  I don't know where you are from but people are murdered every day.  Are you saying that this is some gay person's fault?  They seemed to be blamed for every wrong out there.

We straight people have nothing over gay people.  We aren't better than they are.  It takes a special kind of arrogance to really believe that!  I am a teacher and have seen straight parents screw their kids up so badly that the kids will NEVER recover.  If Mr. and Mr. Homosexual are able to love and cherish their child, who am I to judge?  Who is anybody? 

If you feel comfortable to sit and judge people just because they love a particular person that just happens to be the same sex, I cant stop you.  Just think about this for a second:  the criticism that you have for gay people, could probably be said of many minorities.  Just change the names around!

You also need to realize that the more that these religious crazies draw attention to the fact that MAYBE Spongebob or Tinkie Winkie are gay or the Secretary of Education tells us to boycott Postcards from Buster because for 5 seconds they discuss a family that has 2 moms, the less time and attention is placed on real issues. (it's just making the accusers seem more nuts than they already are!)  Don't you think that instead of talking about a kids show, the Secretary could have announced a great initiative to help schoolchildren?  That is time well spent!

So, to answer the questions that have probably come up: No, I am not gay.  No, none of my family members are gay.  I have no gay friends that I know of.  I just believe in treating people with respect and decency.  It's a lesson that I hope to teach my boys.  It's a lesson that I would hope that others learn soon!

So, as you go on your travels, I hope that you learn it fast.  Bigotry is a hurtful thing!

There is no "Break" in Spring Break

Busy week.

Very tired.

We went to DC and Baltimore over Easter.  The kids had a great time.  On the trip up, the 8 yo was feeling pretty queasy.  He held up okay until we got to Fuddrucker's in DC.  After his burger, he wound up yakking it up all over the floor.  He wasn't embarrassed.  I think that he was just relieved.  My beloved on the other hand was pretty embarrassed.  I don't know how I would have reacted but I think that ultimately would have blown it off because we were on vacation.  After he told the appropriate authorities, it wound up on the floor about 20 minutes later.  EW!

We went to the White House too.  I didn't expect to get as pissed off as I did.  I don't think that I have ever had such an emotional reaction to a place.  I was just thinking about what a mess the country is in and how it is going to affect my kids... It may sound stupid but that's what enormous amounts of frustration will get you.

I think that the biggest thrill that the kids got was swimming in the indoor pool.  They loved it!  We went to church at the local Epsicopal church.  It was interesting to compare an inner city church to what we usually go to.  The idea of serving the poor is an idea that is easily seen.  We talk about it but this is in action. 

Then it was off to Baltimore.  This portion of the trip could best be described as a hell of a lot of walking!  That's all we did.  The 4yo (then 3 yo) was carried around a lot by me and then by my beloved.  We went to dinner, found out that there was a ball game and that was all that my beloved needed to know.  He took the 8yo and made a night of it.  I was okay with it because I was damn tired at this point and knew that the little guy would go down pretty easy.  The next day, we walked around the harbor more and went to the Camden Yards tour.  Pretty cool tour.  We got to see the stuff that only the rich and famous do.  Lemme just say this: The luxury boxes are sweet! 

All throughout the trip, the 4yo would not eat.  Maybe a few bites here and there.  On the way back, as soon as we got home he had rip-roaring diarrhea.  Poor guy!  It took a few days to recover from the trip.  Both kids were wiped from the long trip and their allergies.  Then after a trip to the doctors to make sure that it was just allergies, it was time for the 3yo's party.  So at 6 am he promtly threw up in the bathroom.  Then after laying in bed with me, the scheduled phone call from Elmo (the 8yo arranged that) didn't even cheer him up because he threw up again.  (I have had ENOUGH of bodily fluids to last me a while)  Somehow, he perked up enough to enjoy his party.  I think that he was thrilled that all of his friends were together in one spot just for him! 

I still can't believe that he is now the 4yo!

An Open Letter to My Almost Four-Year Old

I'm not kidding myself, Spring Break really isn't a break!  With us going on vacation, I thought that I would get this out of the way.  It's close enough...

Dear Four Year Old,

I can't believe that you are turning 4.  How did this happen?  Where did the years go and how come they went so fast?  I still remember when you were first born.  Even though I was a mom for four years before you came, you were still a mystery.  Such a little guy with your own distinct personality.  All of the tricks that I used on your big brother to get you to stop crying didn't work for you.  Your dad and I had to learn all new tricks.  I remember just wanting to cuddle with you in the hospital bed.  I was so happy that you finally came that I couldn't put you down. 

Since then, you have turned into such a wonderful boy.  You are so loving and kind to your friends and family.  You adore everyone around you.  I was looking through your pre-school news letters from last year.  They all say basically the same thing:  You are pleasant, friendly and are a great listener.  If you have the misfortune to come across someone who is not so nice to you, you take it so personally.  It really hurts you that there are kids that are a bit on the bratty side.

You can be pretty bossy sometimes.  If things aren't a certain way or plans change or someone doesn't say something EXACTLY the way you want, you can get pretty mad.  It never lasts too long and soon, you are back to yourself.

I see you as having a great ability to be creative.  You work out the best plays with your Matchbox cars.  There was one time a few days ago when you put on Daddy's basball hat and his workshoes.  You said to me," Hey Missus, I gotta go to work."  Then you imitated Daddy's usual rant when he is late.  It was priceless and something that I will never forget.  I don't think that your dad will either. 

I think that you are going into a great little boy.  You make us all so happy and we love you very much.

Good Friday? Eh... Not That Good!

Okay, this is the deal.  I'm going to set the scene:

We are going away for Easter and I am trying to pack.  At the same time, I think that I am coming down with a cold.  (still made it to the gym)  Every once in a while, I have to stop because I am run down. 

The kids are playing with their new/refurbished computer.  They are using the microphone and the belly laughs coming from the ALMOST (ugh) four year old are awesome.  Let us all hope that this will continue!

"Sesame Beginnings" Spark Outrage

NEW YORK (AP) - April 3, 2006 - The creators of "Sesame Street" are releasing a new line of videos Tuesday targeted for children as young as six months, outraging some child-development experts who feel no form of TV or video is suitable for kids under 2.

Listen, I have not had our boys watch TV when they were babies.  I thought that Teletubbies were stupid.  Occasionally we would watch Sesame Street.  I made sure that the 8 yo didn't watch TV as a baby.  The second time around... you stretch the rules a bit.   No TV is sometimes is a hard rule to follow sometimes.  I always figured that if the kids play more than they watch, I'm pretty much ahead of the game.

Sesame Street seems to have "whored" themselves out a bit.  We live an hour away from Sesame Place.  The tickets prices are outrageous, the food prices are outrageous, and the lines for the rides are two hours long.  That doesn't seem very family-oriented to me.  These videos sound like just another way to rake in some money.

It just seems like not such a noble endeavor from the good folks at Sesame Workshop.  Those are my thoughts and I am sticking with them.
