While the missus and I were on our little sleepover, we stopped in at Barnes and Noble for a couple magazines. Whenever we're on vaca we end up picking up magazines because when you're trying to chill, the last thing you want to read is something as heavy (in weight and subject) as The Americanization Of Benjamin Franklin.
So I picked up Paste, a music magazine that I've wanted to get for a while now. It ended up being a great read, and I'm tempted to get a subscription. Each issue comes with a CD sampler (and subscribers get a DVD sampler as well).
The highlight on the latest issue's sampler is easily the Cincinnati-based Over The Rhine's song "Born," which is now available for free on their website as well. Just a beautiful and haunting song. I think I had heard of the band (which has lost some members over the years and is now consists solely of the husband-wife team of Linford Detweiler and Karin Bergquist), but I don't know if I had ever actually heard any of their stuff. "Born" made me head straight over to their website to download anything I could.
Which brings me to the point of this post. One of the free mp3's on Over The Rhine's site is a song written for an Ohio-area children's record. The song comes at a time when my three-year old seems to be having some, shall we say, waste management confusion. We are hoping that he learns to love this song, because it speaks specifically to his current problem.
Ladies and gentlemen, I give you an instant classic; I give you "Poopsmith" [download it here]:
Not on your arm
Not on your leg
Not in the toast
Not in the eggsNot on the carpet
Nor the linoleum
Just how did your little brother
Get it smeared all over him?Poop in the potty
Poop goes in the potty
Poop in the potty
Poop goes in the potty
Poop in the potty
Poop goes in the potty
Poop in the potty
Poop goes in the pottyNot on your brother
Not on your sis
Not on any family member
You might want to make a listNot on the plants
Not in your hair
Not on the porch
No we do not want to sharePoop in the potty
Poop goes in the potty
Poop in the potty
Poop goes in the potty
Poop in the potty
Poop goes in the potty
Poop in the potty
Poop goes in the pottyNot on the swing
Not on the slide
Not while we are spinning on a carnival rideNot on the window
Not on the wall
No more surprises
On the light switch down the hallHey!
Poop in the potty
Poop goes in the potty
Poop in the potty
Poop goes in the potty
Poop in the potty
Poop goes in the potty
Poop in the potty
Poop goes in the pottyNot in the yard
You're on your honor
Don't go getting no ideas
from the neighbor's weimaranerPoop in the potty
Poop goes in the potty
Poop in the potty
Poop goes in the potty
Poop in the potty
Poop goes in the potty
Poop in the potty
Poop goes in the pottyShhhhhh.....
That's a hilarious song. I have been an OTR fan of sorts for over ten years (it's a college thing, I guess -- well, the girls were always impressed by it). Anyway, I posted a link to that mp3 for a while from my blog, and my sister and brother-in-law (5 kids) got a real kick out of it, as did a few other folks.
I'd never read the lyrics 'til just now. I had it in my head that the one line read, "Don't go getting no ideas
from the neighbor Juan Muraner." - but it makes a lot more sense now...

That is hilarious! My kids will love it. Thanks for posting it, best of luck with potty training. We're still a few months away, not looking forward to it.
