Just Deserts

Karen (you know, from Verbatim, the blog from where I steal all my best ideas) posted the "100 most popular songs" from her high school graduation year of 1980 and calls the year a "musical desert." But if 1980 was a desert, it looks like a friggin' waterpark next to my last year of high school, 1986. Let's compare:

The number one song in 1980 was by Blondie, who today still has punk-rock street cred. 1986? Dionne Warwick, Elton John, and Gladys Knight. Warwick was a psychic punchline even back then and Gladys' Pips just weren't as perky as they once were. Sorry, but it's true.

The number two song in '80 was by Pink Floyd, not their greatest stuff, but nothing you're ashamed to admit you listened to. Number two in '86? Lionel Richie. "Say You, Say Me." Say Good God.

The #3 in '80 was by Olivia Newton John and in '86 was Klymaxx and it starts falling apart for both years, so I'll stop here.

I've bolded my 10 favorite songs from the list because, like Karen, I am a nerd. No, no, it's true, I checked.
